You’ve been dupe’d: Nice data — let’s see them again

As we’ve said before, with hundreds of retractions per year, there are simply too many for us to cover individually.

So from time to time we’ll compile a list of retractions that appeared relatively straightforward, just for record-keeping purposes.

Often, these seemingly straightforward retractions involve duplications, in which authors — accidentally or on purpose — republish their own work elsewhere.

Sometimes journals and authors blame this event on “poor communication,” our first example notes:

1. Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of intervertebral test spacers: an experimental comparison of magnesium versus titanium and carbon fiber reinforced polymers as biomaterials. Irish Journal of Medical Science. 2010. 179: 107-111. T. Ernstberger, G. Buchhorn, G. Heidrich. Cited five times, according to Thomson Reuters Web of Science. Retracted March 2015:

The above named article is to be retracted from the Irish Journal of Medical Science. As a result of poor communication, the manuscript was submitted to Neuroradiology whilst still under consideration by the Irish Journal of Medical Science, and subsequently published online by Neuroradiology on 26th May 2009. The article was published online within the Irish Journal of Medical Science on 20th August 2009; due to being the latter of the two article versions, the Editor-in-Chief of the Irish Journal of Medical Science has decided to retract the article. Readers wishing to access the article content can do so at Neuroradiology, August 2009, Volume 51, Issue 8, pp 525-529, DOI: 10.1007/s00234-009-0537-4.

In this example, the authors submitted the paper to two places, so the last journal to publish decided to retract:

2. Retrospective Study on Effectiveness of Activ L Total Disc Replacement: Clinical and Radiographical Results of 1- to 3-Year Follow-up. Spine. 2015. 40: 411-417. S. Lu, C. Kong, Y. Hai, Q. Wang, L. Zang, N. Kang, X. Meng, Y. Wang. Cited only by its retraction. Retracted November 2015:

Lu S, Kong C, Hai, Y, et al. Retrospective Study on Effectiveness of Activ L Total Disc Replacement: Clinical and Radiographical Results of 1- to 3-Year Follow-up. SPINE 2015 40(7): E411-E417. DOI: 10.1097/BRS.0000000000000773. SPINE retracts this article from the literature because the article was submitted to Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques on September 27, 2013 and submitted later to SPINE on October 28, 2013. The authors were in violation of their copyright agreement when they submitted to SPINE after submitting to Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques. The authors originally contacted Wolters Kluwer about dual publication in 2015 and requested a retraction from Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques. The article was accepted by Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques on November 19, 2014 and posted on Publish Ahead of Print on December 20, 2014. After revision, SPINE accepted the article on December 16, 2014 and published it in the April 1, 2015 issue.

The following paper duplicated from two others, one of which was also withdrawn:

3. Clinical effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer: An updated meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. European Journal of Surgical Oncology. 2014. 40: 1321-1330. B. Xiong, L. Ma, Y. Cheng, C. Zhang. Cited seven times. Retracted July 2015:

This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/withdrawalpolicy).

This article has been retracted at the request of the Editor-in-Chief.

The Editors of the EJSO – European Journal of Surgical Oncology were recently alerted to the fact that the article mentioned above duplicates two other published papers:

An updated meta-analysis of randomised controlled trial assessing the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer

Xiong, Y. Cheng, L. Ma, C-Q. Zhang

Cancer Investigation, 2014, Volume 32, pages 272–284, http://dx.doi.org/10.3109/07357907.2014.911877

Clinical effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced gastric cancer: An updated meta-analysis of 12 randomised controlled trials

Xiong, L. Ma, W. Huang, Y. Cheng, Q. Zhao, J. Liu

Surgical Oncology, 2014, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.suronc.2014.11.005 (withdrawn)

As the duplication violates the publication policies of the EJSO and the Editors have not received an adequate response from the authors as to the reason for the duplication, the article has been retracted from the journal.

The next two duplications were issued by the same journal in the same issue (January 2016):

4. Distribution of carbon, nitrogen, carbohydrate and calcium carbonate in aggregates of histosols in Shahrekord, Iran. Archives of Agronomy and Soil Science. 2015. 61: 1625-1639. A. Abasian, A. Golchin, M. Sheklabadi, A. Beheshti Alagha. Cited only by its retraction. Retracted January 2016:

The following article has been retracted from publication in the Taylor & Francis journal Archives of Agronomy and Soil Science:
