Chemistry papers retracted for “lack of objectivity:” The authors did their own peer review

synthreactSynthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry is retracting three articles for duplication — redundancy the authors, chemical engineers at Islamic Azad University, in Shahreza, Iran, appear to have gotten around by reviewing their own manuscripts. But, if they did say so themselves, those papers were really something!

Here’s the retraction notice for two of the papers, both of which appeared in 2012 and which were cited seven times and once, respectively, according to Thomson Scientific’s Web of Knowledge:

We, the Editor and Publisher of Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry, are retracting the following articles on the grounds of redundant publication:

Bahram Mokhtari and Kobra Pourabdollah, “Emulsion Liquid Membranes for Effective Inclusion Extraction of Alkali Metals by Nanobaskets of Calixarene” Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry 42.7 (2012): 1013-1021.

Bahram Mokhtari and Kobra Pourabdollah, “Electrochemical Study of Structural Effects in Complexation of Nano-baskets: Calix[4]-1,2-crown-3, -crown-4, -crown-5, -crown-6” Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry 42.8 (2012): 1091-1097.

We are now cognizant that the authors have reused and republished content from the aforementioned articles in Desalination: The International Journal on the Science and Technology of Desalting and Water Purification (Print ISSN: 0011-9164; Online ISSN: 1873-4464) and Talanta: The International Journal of Pure and Applied Analytical Chemistry (Print ISSN: 0039-9140; Online ISSN: 1873-3573) without adequate acknowledgement.

We have also ascertained that the aforementioned manuscripts were self-reviewed by the authors.

These actions constitute a breach of warranties made by the authors prior to publication. We note we published these articles in good faith based on these warranties, and censure these actions. The retracted articles will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but they will be digitally watermarked on each page as RETRACTED.

The third article, “Synthesis and Evaluation of an Organometallic pH-Responsive Nanocomposite,” has a similar, but somewhat more amusing, statement:

We, the Editor and Publisher of Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry, are retracting the following article due to a lack of reviewer objectivity throughout the peer review process:

Bahram Mokhtari and Kobra Pourabdollah, “Synthesis and Evaluation of an Organometallic pH-Responsive Nanocomposite” Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic, Metal-Organic, and Nano-Metal Chemistry 43.5 (2013): 588–593.

We are now cognizant that the authors self-reviewed the manuscript during the peer review process. This action constitutes an ethical breach of warranties made by the authors. We note we published the article in good faith based on these warranties, and censure this action. The retracted article will remain online to maintain the scholarly record, but it will be digitally watermarked on each page as RETRACTED.

As bizarre as it sounds, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen cases of authors duping journals to review their own papers. About a year ago, we reported on the case of Hyung-In Moon, who would end up retracting 28 papers because he peer reviewed them himself.

Moon’s method was to create fake email addresses for known luminaries so that the review requests would go straight to him. We’re not sure how these authors in Iran accomplished the feat, but we’ve tried to contact the journal’s editor and will update with anything we learn.

  1. Readers, here’s an important question that flows from these retractions: Is the situation in which authors are “self-reviewing” papers and embracing “a lack of reviewer objectivity” any worse than an author “self-publishing” and having “a lack of Guest Editor objectivity”, if the end result is a nonsense-based paper poisoning the scientific record and an important public debate?

Mr Dietrich Rordorf, the Chief Executive Officer of the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), may be wrestling with that issue as he drags the chain on retracting the incompetent Australian Paradox paper: Section 2 in

Looking beyond the University of Sydney’s “shonky sugar study”, I caution readers against publishing any of their own work while operating as a “Guest Editor” for a special issue of an MDPI journal, or indeed any journal.

Sorry, but the harsh reality is that if the only place your work can be published is in the journal you are overseeing, it’s probably the case that the paper should be binned rather than self-published. Unfortunately, the world is not running so short of shonky science that there is an urgent need for more to be self-published.

  2. About a year ago, as editor, a manuscript reached me with suspicious reviewer email addresses. Checked them on the web and some reviewers did not exist, and others not with the email addresses supplied. Needless to say, the journal rejected the manuscript and informed the researchers superiors. Haven’t heard if any action was undertaken though. As editor, these things are not too difficult to spot if one knows about these possible tricks – I know about them thanks to RW! In any case, I feel an editor should try to appoint at least one referee not suggested by the authors.

  3. It must be really bad for an editor to have to retract a paper, but it is also a good sign for a journal to have an editor to do this instead of not acting at all. In my fields two plagiarized papers were not retracted (yet), in one case the university fully supports the plagiarizing professors’ lab, in the other case, the editor wants the corresponding author and all coauthors to confirm the facts. But here, it seems to be clear and fast; one should acknowledge the work of the tricked editor.

    1. Plagiarism is something which decreases the faith in Science and that too because of few people. Such pseudo scientists simply do either do CTRL C & CTRL V or publish one manuscript in many journals.

As Editor-in-Chief of Indo Global Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, I have traced two articles published in our journal (IGJPS, 2011, Vol 1, Issue 2) as clear plagiarized ones.

      First Article:
Japan Patel, Brijesh Patel, Hardeep Singh Banwait, Bhagirath Patel, Manish Patel, Tejas Patel. Formulation & Evaluation of Aceclofenac Gels Using Sodium CarboxymethylHydroxypropyl Guar and Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose.

      Second Article:

Ahmed A Bosela, Gamal M El Maghraby, Gamal M Mahrous. Design of programmable release formulations for combined therapy.

To stand strictly against plagiarism, we had retracted both these articles and black list both authors as well as their corresponding affiliations.

Moreover, we have traced many plagiarized ones. For Say:

There is one author, Dr. Kiran Mishra who claimed herself to be Head, Applied Science Department, Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Solan (H.P.). She submitted two articles. And we found those were duplicate copy of already published articles and that too from some other authors. So as action against plagiarism, we mailed University authority and surprisingly we got to know that she was not at all the faculty there. She left the institution one and half years before she submitted article.

So in a word, I think we should be much more vigilant towards it and most importantly more strict and legal action.

    1. Zapp, can you please list them in detail? We needa full and public record, even if it is a posting on RW. I am surprised that the name “Japan Patel” didn’t raise any red flags. I mean, how many Indians do you know with the name “Japan”?

  4. These papers have been retracted – the pdfs have retracted written over them in red text:

    1. On the tangential issue of authorship, I was running a check on PubMed today, and found the following, with what appears to be 2196 authors from the Yerevan Physics Institute, Yerevan, Armenia. That’s right, 2196, the total population of a small town about where I live. Allow me to post my query, related to authorship, before I post the actual manuscript authorship list. On RW one often sees papers retracted because of inappropriate authorship, or when a author was not aware of a publication, etc. I ask you, how on earth can the editors and publishers know the exact activity performed by the next list of authors? Percentage-wise, how much did each contribute? Maybe I didn’t get enough sleep last night, but I get the feeling that something just ain’t quite right here… Here goes, enjoy:

      1. Only the first 4 authors were from Yerevan. It is an international collaboration (CMS Collaboration – involving many institutes and very expensive colliders and such. Maybe heard of CERN and LHC?

If that is an usual and accepted way in experimental high particle physics to write papers – why not?

While it may not be relevant in this particular case: In my opinion, the concept that each author on a paper has to fully agree with all content is very abstract and opposed to all real interdisciplinary research. I feel it is more of a legal trick of journal editors to be able to blame all authors for the fault of a single one.
