Editor, Medical Evidence Project

The Medical Evidence Project, an initiative of the Center for Scientific Integrity, seeks an editor to work with its team of researchers investigating the medical literature for problematic research affecting human health. 

The editor will develop reports from work done by MEP researchers, or sleuths, with an eye toward clear, comprehensive reporting and putting the findings in context. The editor will also work closely with the managing editor of Retraction Watch and its journalists to report on the findings. 

The MEP editor will also occasionally edit news stories for Retraction Watch.

Strong candidates for this role will be familiar with the medical research and scientific publishing ecosystems; have experience with substantive editing, ideally for news outlets; have a strong news sense; and be comfortable with both working independently and collaborating with others to achieve results. 

The salary for this full-time position is $75,000-$90,000 per year, depending on experience, funded by a grant from Open Philanthropy. This is a two-year position with the intention to renew based on budget availability.

Staff reporter, Retraction Watch

Retraction Watch is hiring a second staff reporter to join our small team. If you’re interested in accountability science journalism with impact that drives the conversation around scientific integrity and is frequently picked up by local, national and international news outlets, this role is for you.

The staff reporter will:

  • write two to three stories per week
  • pitch, report and write stories for partner news outlets
  • Salary: $55,000-$70,000 per year, depending on experience

Strong candidates for this role will have experience and/or training in journalism; experience chasing challenging stories and working with a variety of sources; familiarity with the medical research and scientific publishing ecosystems; and the ability to work independently.

This position is made possible through generous support from our donors. It is a two-year position, with the intention to renew based on budget availability.

Assistant researcher, Retraction Watch Database

The Center For Scientific Integrity, a U.S.-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is looking for a full-time Assistant Researcher to join our crew in maintaining the Retraction Watch Database (RWDB), the world’s most comprehensive, manually curated database of retractions. The RWDB, owned by Crossref and maintained by The Center For Scientific Integrity, is a vital resource for researchers, academics and policy-makers. Numerous bibliographic software systems also incorporate our downloads for their own users.  

The Assistant Researcher will enter data into an existing database, locate source material from searches through various publishing and indexing platforms or from spreadsheets, and quality-check existing entries as assigned. The successful candidate, who will report to Research Director Alison Abritis, will also flag retractions that may be of particular interest for our journalists, or that may indicate a new growing trend in retractions.

The position is a full-time, fully remote position. 

Position Responsibilities, Skills and Qualifications:  

  • Ability to accurately enter and proofread information in a database for extended blocks of time
  • An eye for detail to discern inconsistencies and patterns in database entries
  • Knowledge of the scholarly publishing ecosystem
  • Able to work independently and within a group

Preferred qualifications:

  • College degree
  • Fluency and/or familiarity with multiple languages
  • Experience in scholarly publishing 

Salary: $40,000 per year, with a small amount of flexibility for significant experience

The Center and all of its projects are fully remote workplaces. Any role can be based anywhere in the world, as long as successful candidates can commit to at least four hours per day of overlap with US East Coast working hours. 

We do not offer health insurance, but U.S. employees are eligible for a 401(k) with a generous match. We also offer paid vacation time and unlimited sick time.
