Here’s something lovely to cheer you up.
Yesterday’s Courier-Mail in Queensland, Australia, published a heart-warming note in the birth announcements – a retraction for a 1995 birth announcement of a baby girl.

“A RETRACTION – BOGERT –
In 1995 we announced the arrival of our sprogget, Elizabeth Anne, as a daughter. He informs us that we were mistaken. Oops! Our bad. We would now like to present, our wonderful son – Kai Bogert.
Loving you is the easiest thing in the world. Tidy your room.”
The note was first tweeted by Queensland resident Lisa Dart, and has since been retweeted thousands of times.

Indeed! What a fabulous set of parents. And also a nice controlled experiment showing that teenagers’ reluctance to clean up their rooms is independent of gender identification.
That is sweet. What’s a sprogget? A baby girl/boy? Or a deflection-limiting safety device used in high performance hang gliders? Chances of tidying room: approximately nil.
A sprogget or sprog is a colloquial term of endearment for one’s offspring or a child. The derivation is a bit obscure – I always thought it was a mash up of “frog spawn” but there are other possibilities.
Sprog is a child, sprogget the diminutive, I would guess.
I do take issue with the room tidying though, since the time for tidying is not specified. I am certain that in number of years in the future, Kai’s, room may be as tidy as his parent’s 🙂
