An article by Alexander Spivak, a mathematician based in Israel, is being retracted from the proceedings of a 2014 numerical analysis meeting because Spivak had already published “a major part of text and results” in a mathematics journal in 2010.
Spivak, a member of the faculty of sciences at Holon Institute of Technology, has a bit of a history with the journal that published his initial 201o paper, the International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics. That journal retracted two of his papers last year after learning from Zeev Schuss, Spivak’s post-doc supervisor at Tel Aviv University, that those papers contained plagiarized chunks from a paper by Schuss and two colleagues.

This article has been retracted at the request of the AMCL’s Digital Library TRITON Managing Editor.
Neither the retracted nor the original paper has been cited.

We tried to reach a representative of Triton, the publisher of the Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Numerical Analysis, but the email bounced back and we received an error message from a contact form.

ISHS lack of public accountability
I strongly applaud the mathematical proceeding’s organizers and editors for showing the right way to deal with plagiarism.
Regrettably, in the plant and horticultural sciences, there is one extremely urgent case that is failing to advance. I call once again, publicly, to the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) President, Prof. Dr. Roderick A. Drew, and the Board (http://www.ishs.org/ishs-board), to address the issues outlined in the 22 cases indicated next, and to correct the literature associated with Acta Horticulturae.

Other than wasting paper, why is duplication a problem here?
This isn’t a data science situation where meta analysis can depend on the results being
new.
Off the top of my head there are two bigger problems:
One: it’s not just wasting paper, it’s wasting the time of the people who attended the talk and who read the paper. That’s much worse.
Two: it’s cheating the system with regards to how many papers one has published. We may not like it, but promotions, future appointments, even how other scientists form their opinion of you are all affected by the number of papers you have published.
Yes, totally agree with both points. Especially if someone who is presenting at that conference is showing something entirely new. It’s a bit disrespectful to attend with old work pretending it’s new. He can attend without presenting any work…so it isn’t a requirement of attending.
On a side note, I have seen people present work in a conference followed by a journal. However, in the later work, you need to cite the earlier work and maybe add a footnote stating that the journal has “expanded” the earlier one. I think that’s ok and, given this, I guess the reverse (with the journal before the conference) is fine too. All provided that there *is* “substantial” difference (as judged by the reviewers with this additional information given to them instead of having them use Google).
Oh, isn’t it trivial? This duplication is problematic for two reasons. First, it is a simple way to inflate a publication list. Second, the conference was held in Crete so the guy also “earned” a nice (and free-of-charge!) vacation there paid from his university travel grant (thank you, Israeli taxpayers!) Not bad at all.
