BMJ Case Reports pulled three dental papers for plagiarism

BMJ Case ReportsWe’ve stumbled upon a trio of retractions published in August, 2013 from BMJ Case Reports for “redundant publication” to a group of researchers based in India.

Editors found that the reports, which were published between 2012 and 2013, had considerable “overlaps” with articles that had been published in other journals. Although one of the retracted authors was also an author on one of the overlapping articles, the rest of the authors have no obvious connection to the previous work.

The authors of the three retracted papers are based at the Modern Dental College and Research Centre in India.

One retracted paper, “A rare occurrence of peripheral ossifying fibroma in the first decade of life and its management,” described the case of a 10 year-old girl with a lesion growing on her gums. The notice reads:

BMJ Case Reports wishes to inform its readers of the following redundant publication.

The publication:

Vyawahare S, Banda NR, Barodiya A, et al. A rare occurrence of peripheral ossifying fibroma in the first decade of life and its management. BMJ Case Rep. Published Online:15 Mar 2013. doi: 10.1136/bcr-2013-009084.

Considerably overlaps with the article:

Nazareth B, Arya H, Arora SAR, et al. Peripheral Ossifying fibroma: a clinical report. Int J Odontostomat 2011;5:153-6.

The article in BMJ Case Reports has been retracted.

BMJ Case Reports also retracted “Maxillary adenomatoid odontogenic tumour,” a report published in 2013 that detailed the surgical removal of a tumor and a year of patient follow-up. The retraction notice reads the same:

BMJ Case Reports wishes to inform its readers of the following redundant publication.

The publication:

Barodiya A, Banda NR, Banda VR, et al. Maxillary adenomatoid odontogenic tumour. BMJ Case Rep. Published Online:14 Jun 2013. doi: 10.1136/bcr-2013-010004.

Considerably overlaps with the article:

Rashmi G, Goje S, Harshavardhan S, et al. Adenomatoid odontogenic tumour: case report. National Academy of Dentistry 2009;1.

The article in BMJ Case Reports has been retracted.

Here is a link to the 2009 report.

The third retraction was for a 2012 report, “Odontomas-silent tormentors of teeth eruption, shedding and occlusion,” that overlapped with a 2011 article in  Contemporary Clinical Dentistry:

BMJ Case Reports wishes to inform its readers of the following redundant publication.

The publication:

Kulkarni VK, Deshmukh J, Banda NR, et al. Odontomas-silent tormentors of teeth eruption, shedding and occlusion. BMJ Case Rep. Published Online: 14 Dec 2012. doi: 10.1136/bcr-2012-007666.

Considerably overlaps with the article:

Kulkarni VK, Vanka A, Shashikiran ND. Compound odontoma associated with an unerupted rotated and dilacerated maxillary central incisor. Contemp Clin Dent 2011;2:218–21.

The article in BMJ Case Reports has been retracted.

In this case, both papers share a first author. All three retractions are co-authored by Naveen Reddy Banda and Vanaja Reddy Banda.

A spokesperson for the BMJ said that the authors agreed to the retractions.

Please be advised that we have received information highlighting significant overlap in the discussion sections of the below referenced case reports to other articles and we agreed with the authors that they should be retracted to avoid duplicate publication.

We’ve contacted Vanaja Reddy Banda and the last authors of the three overlapped papers. We’ll update if we receive a response.
